  1. Will my name be known to anyone if I complete the survey?

A: NO. All identifying information is strictly confidential.

  2. Will my email generate spam?

A: NO. This is an independent project not connected with any groups or organization. No email addresses will be sold, leased or shared with any other group, list or organization.

  3. How will this information be used?

A: The purpose is to collect STATISTICAL (non-identifying) data on numbers and percentages of birthmothers who were promised confidentiality as opposed to those who were not.

  4. I am opposed to open records, should I participate?

A: YES. Please, by all means. We want ALL birthmothers to participate so we can present the truth.

  5. What if I don’t want my comments to be viewed?

A: Indicate that – preferably right at the beginning or at the end of your comments and that will be respected.

  6. I don’t have my surrender papers, where can I get them?

A: Contact the agency or attorney who handled the relinquishment of your child. Success or failure depends on the state and how recent or long ago your surrender took place. Some agencies claim that they are part of the sealed records and cannot be released without a court order, if at all. Others may claim they do not keep records beyond a certain number of years. You might also check to see if your parents or grandparents might have such documents.

  7. Why are questions like “are you opposed to open records?” or “would you testify against open records?” even asked?

A: Because, the purpose of this survey is to expose the TRUTH – whatever that may be, in as fair a manner as is possible. It is already obvious, just from the first handful of responses, that we are NOT reaching a strictly select group of searching birthmothers all of whom want open records. To do so would skew the results. It is important to get opinions and hear viewpoints from ALL birthmothers.

  8. What if I surrendered more than one child?

A: Please complete and submit a separate survey for EACH surrender.

  9. What Can I Do?

    A: Go to
Spread the Word and find the different ways you can help with the BirthParent Project.
